How yoga helps detoxifying
Certain asanas can support the detox process
A detox-oriented yoga class includes specific asanas which help the body eliminate lymphatic fluid, carbon dioxide and lactic acid. In particular through twists such as the twisted chair pose or triangle, the abdominal organs are stimulated which enhances both digestion and blood circulation. This way toxins build ups in our body can partially dissolved. Thus, it is recommended to drink a lot water after a Yoga Detox class to flush the toxins out of the body. Prone asanas (e.g. bow pose) or forward bends also support the detoxification process by applying light pressure on the organs.
Inversions, where the legs are placed higher than the head, have a particularly positive effect on the lymphatic system, so to speak the purification system in our body. It filters and removes everything that the body does not need (e.g. bacteria, toxins and viruses). In addition, the blood circulation is stimulated, and the cardiovascular system is strengthened. Generally, a very good mix to strengthen the entire immune system.
Detoxifying through the breath
Yogic breathing exercises “Pranayama” have an important role in the detoxification process. In everyday life, our breathing happens completely automatically which often results in an uneven and shallow breath. Through the pranayama practice, attention is consciously directed to the breath.
The focus is on perceiving and deepening the breath. Deep inhalations increase the oxygen supply to the circulatory system which leads to an improvement of the energy supply in the whole organism. Long exhalations, on the other hand, cause a relaxation of the vegetative nervous system which can prevent stress and high blood pressure. Very suitable pranayama exercises for a detox programme are for example Kapalabhati (breath of fire), Nadi Shodana (alternate nostril breathing) or the Ujjayi breath.
Letting go of toxic thoughts
By now the connection between our mental state and our general well-being has been scientifically proven. As per Buddha’s statement “You are what you think” we can assume that not only external influences create toxins in our body. We create toxins ourselves through our own thought processes.
In order to give ourselves a break from our mostly repetitive thought loops breathing exercise can be very helpful to enter the precious space of the “here and now”. Another wonderful way to let go of your thoughts is the Savasana practice, the deep relaxation at the end of a yoga class. During our yoga detox retreats we also offer guided meditation which supports you specifically in your spiritual purification process.
